You tend to hear about the most common food allergies over and over again so much so that you haven’t thought about other foods that are out there and could be causing you discomfort or worse. Village Emergency Center wants to inform you on the possible threats to your health that are out there. It’s important to know what you’re consuming and how it affects your body. If you have been having symptoms that you don’t know the underlying issue, this blog might open your eyes to what is going on within your body. Here is a list of uncommon food allergies and what to do to treat unexpected symptoms.
Food Allergy Warning: Cross Reactivity
Those who have pollen allergies experience allergic reactions to certain foods because of their close relationship to the pollen rich plants. Cross reactivity has been seen among grass pollens, fruits, vegetables, and spices. You will notice that many of the items on this list experience cross reactivity. As a consumer of these items, it’s important to know which foods cross react and are likely to cause you an allergic reaction.
Apple
Most symptoms of an apple allergy are oral. Within half an hour of consuming the apple, you will start to experience discomfort. To ease your discomfort, you must stop consuming apples. Allergy symptoms can range from mild to severe, the worst being throat swelling as this can make breathing difficult. If you are experiencing trouble breathing please seek medical treatment immediately. Circumstances like these are time sensitive.
Citrus Fruits
Acidic fruits like grapefruit and lime can cause itchiness of the mouth. More severe symptoms can lead to anaphylactic shock. It’s important to know the symptoms as they can be life threatening. Symptoms include hives, itching, pale skin color, wheezing, and low blood pressure. Be very careful if you find yourself allergic to one citrus fruit as you might be allergic to other citrus fruits as well. Chances for that are high.
Banana
Banana allergies also show prominent symptoms around the mouth. Common symptoms include itchiness around the mouth and throat area, hives, swelling, and trouble breathing properly.
Meat
An allergy to red meat is due to a tick bite that can be found in Southeastern part of the United States known as the Lone Star tick. Unlike allergies to fruit, meat allergies can take hours to show symptoms. People who are allergic to beef, pork, lamb, or goat tend to experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and itching. Just like with citrus fruits, if you are allergic to one specific type of meat, you have higher chances of being allergic to other types of meat. We suggest an allergy test to discover meat allergies due to their latent symptom nature. Meat allergies also have the ability of resulting in anaphylactic shock, which is why it’s very important to know if you are allergic beforehand.
Avocados
Proteins found in avocados are similar to those found in latex, so if you are allergic to either it’s best to avoid both. 3 million cases of latex allergies are reported each year, so chances are you will find it more known to have a latex allergy than an avocado allergy.
Corn
Corn is an unfortunate allergy to have as you must avoid it in all the forms it comes in. Make sure you read the labels of all the food products you consume, especially processed foods in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
